Safeguarding means protecting an adult's right to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect. It is about people and organisations working together to prevent and stop both the risks and experience of abuse or neglect.
Adults at risk may be unable to protect themselves from harm due to their care and support needs. Everyone has a role to play in safeguarding adults.
What is Abuse?
Abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, financial, neglect, discriminatory, organisational, domestic, modern slavery, and self-neglect. It can happen anywhere — at home, in public, in hospital, or in a care home.
Who is at Risk?
Any adult may be at risk if they have care and support needs that make them more vulnerable to abuse or neglect. This includes older people, people with physical or learning disabilities, people with mental health conditions, and people with substance misuse issues.
